Introduction
Permit to Work systems are essential for managing workplace risks during hazardous tasks. This Train-the-Trainer course enables instructors to teach the correct implementation and management of permit systems to ensure safety and compliance.
Course Objectives
- Identify key legal requirements for different permit types (e.g., hot work, confined space).
- Perform and document hazard assessments using JSA and HAZOP tools.
- Conducting and documenting hazard assessments using tools such as JSA and HAZOP.
- Issue, monitor, and close PTWs accurately under simulated conditions.
- Explain integration of PTW within overall workplace safety systems.
- Train others on PTW procedures using adult learning techniques.
- Maintain and organize permit documentation and training records properly.
- Demonstrating correct PTW issuance, monitoring, and closure procedures under simulated conditions.
- Auditing PTW processes and identifying non-conformances.
- Integrating PTW procedures into broader workplace safety management systems.

Course Contents
Day 1: 6 hours
- Overview of Permit to Work Systems
- PTW system purpose and legal requirements
- Types of permits (hot work, confined space, etc.)
- Roles and responsibilities of issuers and receivers
- Common hazards and control measures
- Teaching PTW use effectively
- Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment
- Using JSA, HAZOP, and OSHA’s hierarchy of controls (scenario-based workshop)
- Emergency response for PTW-related incidents (e.g., confined space rescue, hot work fire emergencies)
Day 2: 6 hours
- Adult learning principles and communication strategies
- Presentation skills and confidence-building
- Handling questions and different learning styles
- Use of training aids and materials
- Competency assessments and feedback techniques
- Preparation and delivery of micro-teach session with peer/instructor feedback
Course Duration & Exam
The 2-day, 12-hour course includes a written and practical exam. Graduates receive an OSHAcademy-recognized certificate. Refresher training is recommended every two years.
